Vellie Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how SJ Origin LLC ("we," "us," "our"), the company that makes Vellie, collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Vellie mobile app and the website at vellie.app (together, the "Service").
Vellie helps you remember the people you care about, reminds you before their special days, and suggests messages and gifts. To do that, we need some information about you and about the people you choose to add. We try to collect as little as we can, and we never sell your data.
1. Information we collect
Information about you
- Account details: your name, email address, and password (stored only in encrypted, hashed form, never as plain text).
- Setup details: your timezone and, if you choose to add it, your own birthday (month and day).
- Preferences: your reminder settings, whether you have turned on AI suggestions, and similar in-app choices.
Information about the people you add
Vellie is built around the people in your life. When you add someone, we store what you enter about them, which may include:
- Their name and your relationship to them (for example, Mom, Friend, Partner)
- Birthdays, anniversaries, festivals, and other occasions you track for them
- The country they live in
- Whether they are in your Inner Circle
- Notes you write in "About them," and details you add while writing a message
- Gift ideas you save or dismiss for them, and gifts you note buying
These people have not signed up for Vellie themselves. Please add only information you would be comfortable with them knowing you keep, and do not add sensitive details such as health conditions, financial information, or government ID numbers.
Information from your phone's calendar and contacts
If you choose to import, Vellie reads your calendar and contacts on your phone to find birthdays and anniversaries. Nothing is sent to us until you review the list and pick what to add. We then save only the items you select, and only:
- From contacts: name and birthday
- From calendar: the name parsed from the event title, the event type (birthday or anniversary), and the date
We never import phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses, photos, meeting details, attendees, or any other calendar events. You can decline these permissions and add people by hand instead.
Information collected automatically
- Usage analytics: we record simple events such as "opened Message Ideas" or "completed import," along with counts and categories and basic device information such as device type, operating system, and app version. These events are tied to an internal account ID, not your name or email, and never include the names, notes, dates, or messages you enter. We do not record your screen.
- Crash reports: if the app or our servers hit an error, we collect technical details such as the error message, stack trace, device type, and app version, tied to an internal account ID. Crash reports are configured not to include names, notes, request contents, or login tokens, and screenshots and screen recordings are turned off.
- IP address: like most online services, our analytics and crash reporting providers receive the IP address your device connects from when the app sends them data.
Notifications
Reminders are scheduled on your device as local notifications. We do not currently send push notifications from our servers.
2. How we use information
We use information to:
- Provide the Service: show your upcoming moments, schedule reminders at the right time for each person's timezone, and organize your people and occasions
- Generate message and gift suggestions (see Section 3)
- Send account emails, such as password reset links
- Keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and enforce usage limits
- Fix bugs and understand which features are useful, using the analytics and crash reports described above
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
3. AI features
Message Ideas and Gift Ideas use Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. These features only work after you turn on AI suggestions, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings. If AI suggestions are off, no information is sent to Anthropic.
When you request a suggestion, we send Anthropic only what is needed to write it:
- The person's name as you saved it
- Your relationship to them and the occasion
- Their "About them" notes
- Any detail you add while writing a message
- For gift ideas only: their country, the price range you pick, gift ideas you saved or dismissed for them, and the last gift you noted buying
We do not send their dates, your email, your other contacts, or anything else from your phone.
Under Anthropic's commercial terms that apply to our use of their service, Anthropic does not use this information to train its AI models. Anthropic processes the information to generate the response and may retain it for a limited period under its own policies, for example for safety and abuse monitoring. AI-generated text can be inaccurate, so please review suggestions before sending them.
4. How we share information
We share information only with service providers that help us run Vellie, and only as needed for their role:

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights or safety of our users or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
Shopping links
Gift suggestions may link to stores such as Amazon, FNP, and others. Some of these may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy something, at no extra cost to you. When you tap a link, you leave Vellie, and the store's own privacy policy applies. We do not receive your payment details or order history from these stores.
WhatsApp and copying messages
When you tap "Send on WhatsApp," Vellie opens WhatsApp with the message filled in. You choose the contact and send it yourself. We do not read your WhatsApp chats or contacts.
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active.
You can edit or delete any person, occasion, or note at any time. You can delete your entire account from Settings. When you do, we delete your account and everything linked to it, including the people you added, their occasions, festival links, saved gift ideas, and usage logs, and the app cancels the reminders scheduled on your device.
Some information may remain in backups for a limited period before it is overwritten, and service providers may keep limited records under their own retention policies.
6. Security
Passwords are stored in hashed form, data is sent over encrypted connections, and access to AI features is limited per account. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
7. Your choices and rights
You can:
- Access and update your information and the people you added in the app
- Turn AI suggestions on or off in Settings
- Decline or revoke calendar, contacts, and notification permissions in your phone's settings
- Delete your account from Settings
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, such as requesting a copy of your data or asking us to correct or delete it. To make a request, email us at the address below. We will respond as required by applicable law.
8. Children
Vellie is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. International users
Vellie is operated from the United States. If you use Vellie from another country, including India, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will let you know in the app or by email before they take effect. If a change affects what is sent for AI suggestions, we will ask for your permission again.
